TOPEKA — The Kansas Senate’s tax committee advanced a proposed state constitutional amendment requiring two-thirds majority votes of the House and Senate to create a new tax or to increase the rate of an existing tax.

NEWTON: Lois May Hamilton, 92, died Monday (February 28, 2022) at the Newton Presbyterian Manor. She was born on May 1, 1929 in Winfield, Ks., the daughter of Sanford A.
Lois Bartel, 84, died peacefully on February 26, 2022, with family at her side, after living at Kidron Bethel in North Newton, Kansas, since 2007. Lois Agatha Franz was born to Julius A and Agatha Dyck Franz December 26, 1937. She joined two brothers and four sisters.
WICHITA – The Bethel College men’s basketball team is returning to the big cathedral of college basketball in Kansas City, Mo., after stopping Saint Francis (Ind.) 78-66 Saturday night in the second round of the NAIA national tournament at the Garvey Center in Wichita.
MANHATTAN – A cold shooting night and getting outscored 20-10 was too much for the Berean Academy girls’ basketball team to overcome in a 44-37 loss to Smith Center in the third-place game of the Class 2A state tournament Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
McPHERSON – The Bethel College softball team went 1-2 Sunday at the McPherson Tournament, falling to Mayville State 12-9 and Morningside 11-2 before stopping Mount Marty 6-5. Against Mount Marty, Bailea Crist doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
I feel some urgency to respond to Rep. Ron Estes’s recent article complaining about the federal budget deficits, blaming Democrats for their spending. He and his Republican colleagues need reminding that the tax cuts of the Trump administration benefited the wealthiest 1% of Americans, and those tax dollars were and still are needed to help close that budget deficit. The middle class was led to believe that they were beneficiaries of the tax cuts, but in fact, the wealthiest 1% received a tax cut 77 times more than the lowest 80%. There were additional loopholes put into place for which the wealthiest 1% received 2/3 of the windfall.
The month of March is celebrated as National Social Work Month. This month serves as a time to recognize the dedication and passion that individuals have devoted to the field of social work. The theme for this year’s celebration is “The Time is Right for Social Work.”
Last week the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University published the results from the 2021 Kansas Speaks survey. For those not familiar with Kansas Speaks, it is an annual public opinion survey that gauges public opinion on various issues of interest to Kansas citizens, including public policy.
