Civic Engagement: Ten Years Later

Between 10 and 15 years ago, political science professors discovered renewed our interest in civic engagement. Retired U.S. Senator Bob Graham and his collaborator Chris Hand published the first edition of their book America: The Owner’s Manual in 2009, arguing that the best hope for the renewal of American democracy lies in teaching a new cadre of involved, interested citizens who begin their journeys of civic activism by making change at the local level, usually on nonpartisan issues. The authors give numerous examples and tips. The American Political Science Association (APSA) hosted their first annual Teaching and Learning Conference in 2005, while the Journal of Political Science Education had debuted the previous year.

Wedding Bustle and Bliss at the Yoders

Friday morning was the hustle of last-minute detail; there was mopping the kitchen a final time, getting breakfast for the children, and dressing them in their Sunday best, and of course washing those last fingerprints from the windows. It was an overcast, but beautiful morning for the wedding.

Bethel splits with Friends The Bethel College softball team posted its third straight KCAC split of the season, sharing wins Saturday against Friends University. Bethel lost the first game 14-2 and won the second game 2-1.

Moundridge sweeps Remington

WHITEWATER – The Moundridge Wildcat softball team swept a doubleheader against the Remington Broncos Friday in HOAL play. Moundridge won the first game 23-17 and the second game 10-7.

Newton swimmers drop times at Heights

WICHITA – The Newton High School girls’ swimming team dropped times and picked up a few more state consideration times Friday at the Wichita Heights Invitational. Results were not received at deadline.

Thresher golfers ninth at home meet

The Bethel College men’s golf team hosted the Bethel Invitational Saturday and Sunday with the first round at the Hesston Golf Course and the second round at Sand Creek Station. Dodge City Community College topped the field at 572, followed by Southeast (Neb.) Community College at 587 and Concordia (Neb.) at 591.
