The death penalty is an antiquated
The death penalty is an antiquated and barbaric method of punishment in any case, regardless of whether the offender is clearly guilty. But in cases in which there is any doubt, the state’s urge to kill is particularly grotesque. Yet the state of Texas is poised to execute a woman who in all likelihood did not commit the crime for which she was sentenced unless radical action is taken before April 27, the day Melissa Lucio is scheduled to die.

With about three weeks left for the operation of a recycling materials collection center at the Harvey County Transfer Station, the Harvey County Commission wanted to revisit a decision to eliminate the service in the face of price hikes.
Railer softball team splits with Derby
The Newton High School softball team had a pitcher’s duel and a slugfest in an AV-CTL I doubleheader split against Derby Tuesday at Kelsch Field. Newton won the first game 2-0 as Tegan Livesay struck out 15, allowing a hit with two walks.
History of challenges adds to current stresses for Kansas farmers and their communities
Kansas farmers, ranchers and rural communities are dealing with challenging conditions these days. Stress is high and uncertainty abounds. Farming has never been easy, but there are a lot of variables at play now that complicate things.

In my first month on the job at Newton High School, I quickly realized that Newton is a special community. As I toured the community and spoke to leaders and organizations, the willingness to support our mission was incredible. Nearly two years later, I have realized that the Newton and USD 373 community truly cares for its own.
