There could be a new fire station up and running, likely on the north side of Newton by 2024 if plans by Fire Chief Steve Roberson come to fruition. The plan has come forward as station one, the oldest (and smallest) station in the department, has become over burdened as the only station north of the train tracks that run through town.

Former president of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, said “A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.” Last week was “official” Teacher Appreciation Week but since teachers are so great, we at the Harvey County United Way salute them all year long for their tireless efforts and positive influences they have on our children. Teaching is one of the oldest professions and as far back as ancient Greece, great value was placed on educating children.
I think middle class Americans need to be made aware of a plan put forward by Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott recently. The plan would raise taxes on 75 million American families, 95% of which make less than $100,000/year. 82% of small business owners who make less than $50,000/year would also see their taxes raised, but there would be nothing to hold corporations accountable, even as they are recording record profits. And when President Biden advises raising taxes on the ultra wealthy, there is an outcry from Republicans who admonish Democrats for being big spenders. I fail to understand the appeal to cutting taxes on the wealthy while raising them on the less fortunate. If it is has to do with trickle down economics, that has proven a failed policy repeatedly since Ronald Reagan first launched the idea 40 years ago.
