Kansas creates American Indian education advisory council

TOPEKA — The Kansas State Board of Education has established a temporary advisory council to improve and reform American Indian learning systems in the state. Cheryl Harrison-Lee, chairwoman of the Kansas Board of Regents, said the creation of the council will help state education officials as they try to close enrollment gaps for underserved Kansans.

Teacher Shortage is a Decades-Long Problem

Nationwide, state education departments face a drastic shortage of K–12 teachers. Although the focus is on these last several years of stressful teaching during the pandemic, this decline in teachers and students desiring to enter teaching began several decades ago. Even without the upheaval caused by necessary and required social distancing, hybrid and fully online course delivery and thousands of missing students, the numbers of new teachers has been declining due to a wider range of measures that have taken away the professional authority of teachers. This decline in teachers varies by grade levels and by subject.

Bethel students do theater with inmates at Hutch Correctional Facility

An unusual theater performance is looking for an audience, as Bethel College’s Prison Theater Project returns as a summer term course. Two students, under the direction of John McCabe-Juhnke, professor emeritus of communication arts, are collaborating with seven inmates at Hutchinson Correctional Facility’s medium-security East Unit for a performance titled Inside Story.
