Eleanor Heckendorn, born May 30, 1937, in Newton, KS, died June 8, 2022, in Eagle, Idaho. The daughter of Martha M. and the Rev. Dr. David C. Wedel, her early life revolved around music and faith. At 17, she was baptized into the Mennonite church. In 1955, she married Arnold Heckendorn, her beloved husband for 65 years. For the next 25 years, she focused on rearing four children and supporting Arnold’s career. After the last son’s college graduation, she returned to college and earned a Bachlors Degree from the University of Phoenix. She worked for the avionics division of Honeywell, representing them for clients including Boeing and Airbus. She loved traveling, especially her business trips to Europe. After her retirement, she and Arnold traveled the U.S. with their RV to see their nine grandchildren and volunteer as camp hosts at several Idaho State Parks. They lived in Sun City, AZ for 20 years, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, serving on the worship and music committee at Willowbrook United Methodist Church. She played violin and was Vice President of the Sun City Community Orchestra and did silver work. In 2019, she and Arnold moved to Eagle, ID. She was predeceased by Arnold in January 2021, and is survived by her four children, Cris Vallee (Don), Deb Dillner (Doug), Steve Heckendorn (Kristen), and Frank Heckendorn, as well as her eight granddaughters and one grandson.
WICHITA — The Wichita Wind Surge fell behind by five runs in the first four innings of play, falling to the Amarillo Sod Poodles 6-3 Thursday night in Texas League play at Riverfront Stadium. Amarillo’s Brent Telller pitched 5.1 innings for the win, striking out four.
WICHITA — An Andrew Bechtold home run in the bottom of the eighth inning appeared to give the Wichita Wind Surge the advantage it needed, but a two-run Leandro Cedeno double with two outs in the ninth inning lifted the Amarillo Sod Poodles to a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in Texas League play at Riverfront Stadium.
CHENEY — The Newton Sluggin’ Rebels claimed a split of weekend games against the Sunflower Collegiate League leading Cheney Diamond Dawgs in Cheney. Friday, Newton claimed a 6-3 win.
My wife’s stepdad, Mike, was notoriously slow to soften. This was especially true if you were me, the bouncy, naive kid dating his stepdaughter.
After the first year of college sports’ name, image and likeness era, football and men’s basketball still claim the throne for the number of deals and average compensation, and social media remains the most popular way to get that NIL money.
As I drive around town seeing the Vote Yes signs for the euphemistically labeled “Value Them Both” amendment, I wonder if those who put up the signs understand what is at stake. They may have a moral or religious objection to abortion, but do they really want the state to have the authority to interfere in our private and personal lives? While the issue may be identified as “abortion,” it is fundamentally an issue of the rights of women to reproductive health care and control over their lives. If approved, the proposed amendment opens the door to further threats to rights that have been codified into law. Like the camel with its nose under the tent, legislators hell-bent on forcing women and girls to give birth no matter the circumstances will push their agenda further to restrict the sexual and reproductive rights of women and families. The decision to terminate a pregnancy is based on many factors. To impose the legal system over that decision flies in the face of individual freedom and sets women’s rights back 50 years. Most of us find ourselves in the middle of what is a very nuanced issue, but extreme and loud voices seek to destroy that middle ground – safe and legal access to abortion with restrictions – which is the law in Kansas now. If the amendment passes, it will open the door for the complete criminalization of abortion and more in our state. I urge you to join me in voting “No” to the proposed amendment.
Kansas already has a law that limits the timing of abortions. The basic question Aug.
Wow!!! Where to begin. What a Fourth of July weekend to remember.
