Three things that happened at Newton-North Newton Area Planning Commission

Approved a plat for New Hope New Hope Shelter, a homeless shelter currently located on the Youthville Campus of Ember Hope on Broadway in Newton, has purchased property located at South Meridian Road and Sharps Drive. This week the planning commission reviewed a plat of the property submitted by Boughman Company on behalf of the New Hope Shelter.

In the garden: Dealing with sunscald

Have you ever seen split bark on a young tree? Or maybe dead wood along the trunk of a young tree? This is likely sunscald. Honey locusts, fruit trees, ashes, oaks, maples, lindens and willows and other thinbarked trees are most commonly affected. Trees that have bark growth lower on the trunk are not susceptible.

Loretta Carol Sauerwein

Loretta Carol Sauerwein, age 64, after a long battle with cancer, died Thursday, July 7, 2022 at her Newton residence. She was born on December 30, 1957 in Anthony, Kansas to Vlastislav and Louise (Anton) Sheen. On September 12, 2009 she married Terry Sauerwein in Newton, and he survives of the home.

Sluggin’ Rebels fall to Aviators, Diamond Dawgs

HAYSVILLE — The Newton Sluggin’ Rebels opened a four-game series against the Haysville Aviators with an 11-1 loss Tuesday in Sunflower Collegiate League play in Haysville. Down 3-1, Newton gave up six runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.

Don’t Put the Government in Charge of Charging

In June, the European Union passed legislation requiring all mobile devices to use one specific port type (USB-C) for recharging their batteries. US Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) , Ed Markey (D-MA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) think that’s a great idea, and that the US should adopt it as well.
