School begins for USD 373

When students began filing into classrooms Aug. 17 for the first day of school in Newton USD 373, the were greeted by teachers. And while that sentence might read as a “no duh” to middle- schoolers, having a teacher in the classroom has proven to be a big deal as school begins for the 2022-23 school year.

Newton opens fall sports practice

Monday was the first day under Kansas State High School Activities Association rules that fall sports teams could begin practice. Newton High School has seven teams that began their pre-season workouts in preparation for the upcoming season.

Don’t be too quick to blame social media for America’s polarization

The past two election cycles have seen an explosion of attention given to “echo chambers,” or communities where a narrow set of views makes people less likely to challenge their own opinions. Much of this concern has focused on the rise of social media, which has radically transformed the information ecosystem. However, when scientists investigated social media echo chambers, they found surprisingly little evidence of them on a large scale – or at least none on a scale large enough to warrant the growing concerns. And yet, selective exposure to news does increase polarization. This suggested that these studies missed part of the picture of Americans’ news consumption patterns. Crucially, they did not factor in a major component of the average American’s experience of news: television.

BC men 9th in poll WICHITA — The Bethel College men’s soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference pre-season poll. Defending champion Oklahoma Wesleyan was picked as the conference favorite over McPherson, Friends and Tabor.
