Threshers win by shutout to open Stokes era

The first “Father Abraham” (the victory song of the Bethel College football team) of the A.B. Stokes era was sung Saturday with a 51-0 win over the undermanned Atlantis University football team Saturday at Thresher Stadium.

Halstead, Hesston compete at CKL PRATT — The Halstead Dragons finished 4-2 and the Hesston Swathers finished 3-3 Saturday at the Central Kansas League Pre-Season Tournament in Pratt. Halstead beat Lyons 25-9, 25-19; lost to Hillsboro 25-11, 25-13; beat Hesston 25-21, 16-25, 25-23; beat Haven 25-20, 22-25, 25-9; lost to Smoky Valley 25-16, 28-26; and beat Pratt 25-14, 21-25, 25-15.

Railer spikers take second at AV-CTL tourney

The Kansan Staff McPHERSON — The Newton High School volleyball team opened the season with a 4-1 start at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Pre-Season Tournament in McPherson. The Railers took second in the six-team round robin tournament.

Young Swather netters fifth in opener

HESSTON — A young Hesston High School girls’ tennis team got a trial by, if not fire, at least mid-90s temperatures with high humidity to open the season Thursday with a fifth-place finish at the Hesston Invitational I at the Hesston High School and Ward Tennis Center. Defending Class 4A state champion McPherson won the team title with 25 points, followed by Buhler at 21, Smoky Valley at 18, defending Class 3-2-1A state champion Wichita Collegiate at 15 and Hesston at 14.
