A historic farm near Moundridge has a habit of making history, and teaching others about useful farm practices. This month that teaching extended to members of NASA, who visited The Flickner Farm.

When Politics and Constitutions Collide
Thomas Jefferson once wrote critically of those who “look at constitutions with sanctimonious reverence, and deem them like the arc of the covenant, too sacred to be touched.” While he firmly opposed “frequent and untried changes in laws,” he argued that, in the end “laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind.” In other words, as people learn and grow and change, their constitutions necessarily should too. These words are on my mind today, with one failed constitutional amendment in our recent past and another constitutional amendment facing Kansas voters this coming November.

School bells are ringing, or more accurately, they are about to ring for the first time in two and a half hours. It’s true; after a term of homeschooling, we are having school again in our little country school! A narrow strip of woods lies between the school and us.
Newton teams unveiled at Fall Sports Fest

Engine problem leads NASA to scrub launch of new moon rocket
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A fuel leak and then an engine problem during final liftoff preparations led NASA to call off the launch of its mighty new moon rocket Monday on a shakedown flight with three test dummies aboard.

Halstead, Hesston compete at CKL PRATT — The Halstead Dragons finished 4-2 and the Hesston Swathers finished 3-3 Saturday at the Central Kansas League Pre-Season Tournament in Pratt. Halstead beat Lyons 25-9, 25-19; lost to Hillsboro 25-11, 25-13; beat Hesston 25-21, 16-25, 25-23; beat Haven 25-20, 22-25, 25-9; lost to Smoky Valley 25-16, 28-26; and beat Pratt 25-14, 21-25, 25-15.
Railer spikers take second at AV-CTL tourney
The Kansan Staff McPHERSON — The Newton High School volleyball team opened the season with a 4-1 start at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Pre-Season Tournament in McPherson. The Railers took second in the six-team round robin tournament.
