The Kansan Staff McPHERSON — The Newton High School girls’ tennis team opened the season with a third-place finish Thursday at the eight-team McPherson Invitational. McPherson Red won the tournament with 56 points, followed by Goddard Eisenhower at 48 and Newton at 41.

Millie Cherryholmes, 90, of Newton, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at Newton Medical Center. She was born March 23, 1932 in Fairview, Missouri, the daughter of Roy and Fern (Carr) Colwell.
Bette Jean (Franz) Rhine 78, of Hesston, Kansas, died August 22, 2022 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas. Bette was born October 24, 1943 in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Olga (Woelk) Franz. She attended First Mennonite Church in Newton. Upon her confession of faith, she was baptized and became a member at 14 years of age.
