KHA Distinguished Health Care Advocate Awarded to STAND Youth

STAND became the first youth organization to be honored with the “ Distinguished Health Care Advocate” by the Kansas Hospital Association this week. STAND is a group of more than 140 students in six high schools across Harvey and Marion Counties whose work is peer-to-peer health advocacy as drug/alcohol preventionists and promoters of positive mental health in youth and adults.

CMS hosts ‘It Takes a Villiage’ night

There were more than 500 hot dogs waiting the the Chisholm Middle School cafateria on Sept. 12, a quick meal for parents, students or community members who wanted a bite before the first “It Takes a Villiage” night at the school. “I am very excited about this,” said principal Joey Menniga. “This is a great event for Chisholm Middle School and for our community. We have done a lot of work to provide activities and a free meal for our families.”

Lynn Edward Anduss passed away on September 17, 2021, in Fort Collins, Colorado at the age of 88. He was born on September 15, 1933, in Newton, Kansas to Edward and Marie (Elliott) Anduss.

Can kindness curb conflict? The science of the smile

I had been outside since 5:45 a.m., in 50-degree drizzle. My feet were soaked despite several changes of socks. My fellow outside poll observers, Republicans and Democrats alike, looked just as forlorn as we answered voters’ questions in Virginia during the 2018 election. At about 2 p.m., a woman with three small kids in tow waved at us as she went in to vote. I loved seeing her – and other parents – bring their kids to the polls. “Thank you for being here!” she called to all of us as she emerged. My colleagues and I smiled at her and each other. We felt good, being part of the electoral process…cold as it was.
