Responding to Bongrager Gregory Bontrager’s most recent letter, printed in The Newton Kansan on September 24, is perhaps the most racist thing I’ve recently seen in our local papers, equating the undocumented Venezuelan migrants, deceptively shipped by DeSantis to Martha’s Vineyard, as “animals” and “third-world squatters.” To the Newton Kansan: “Freedom of speech” does not obligate you to give space to racism. – Dave Osborne, Hesston Lindley Hall and decades of injustice Jim Crow Laws conjure up images of fire hoses and police dogs being used on Minority Americans.

Homecoming court, plans announced

Newton High School recently announced the Fall 2022 Homecoming court and parade route for the annual observance. King candidates for homecoming include Ryan Ruggiero, Camden Carr, Isaac Klug and Collin Hershberger.

Fox Meadows gutted by fire

David Terrones was sitting at home on Sunday, when he saw something alarming. “I was on the back,” Terrones said. “On that balcony the flames were burning like crazy.” He got out of his apartment in Fox Meadows Apartments in the 700 block of West 12th with the clothes on his back and shoes on his feet.

Railer spikers take third at home meet

The Kansan Staff After a 2-6 run of matches in the previous seven days, the Newton High School volleyball team came back for a thirdplace finish Saturday at the Newton Invitational. In the first round of pool play, Newton topped Salina South 25-18, 25-19; and Andover Central 25-23, 22-25, 25-20.
