NEW COVID-19 BOOSTER HELPS PROTECT FROM OMICRON VARIANT

Dear Doctors: The new COVID-19 boosters are here, and I’m not sure if, or when, I need to get one. I had the twoshot Moderna series last winter. I had a mild case of COVID-19 this summer. When I got better, I got the booster. Do I still need to get another one? Am I the only one who is confused?

CASA, Heart-2Heart, SafeHope awarded grants from state funds

TOPEKA – (September 28, 2022) – Three Newton organizations have been awarded more than $107,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime. “Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” said Derek Schmidt, Kansas Attorney General.

Could the county build a new shop on the unused fairgrounds land?

The main shop of the Harvey County Road and Bridge Department, located near the intersection of Old Trail Road and Spencer in Newton, was constructed in 1935. It is a building that is showing its age, on a property that is showing how the needs of the county have changed over the course of the last 87 years. The mail building, constructed of masonry block, has sections that are literally crumbling away. Rectangular columns called Pilasters designed to hold up headers are falling apart - showing the rebar that is inside them.

Alumni award winner is dedicated to Newton community, and its pets

The recipient of Bethel College’s 2022 Young Alumnus Award is dedicated to her community. In fact, it says so, right on Ashley Klein’s CV: “I hang out with dogs and make my community better.” The Young Alumnus Award recognizes character and citizenship, achievement or service rendered, and honors and recognition received.

Railer soccer squad tops Central

With the meat of the schedule coming up, the Newton High School boys’ soccer team’s 6-0 win over winless Salina Central was a change to give some players a well-deserved rest, while still improving the team’s goal differential, which is one of the tie-breakers for post-season seeding. Jonny Galvan scored a goal with three assists to lead the Railers.

Virginia Ann Holub

Virginia Ann Holub, 74, died on September 22, 2022, at Kansas Christian Home in Newton, Kansas. She was born on August 24, 1948, in Sanger, Fresno County, California, the daughter of Charles and Tela (Pendergraft) Cornelius. She attended Newton High School, graduating with the class of 1968. She was protective of her younger sister Alice, and loved playing softball. Virginia earned her C.N.A. certificate and over the next 21 years would work at Kansas Christian Home and Halstead Hospital. On December 27, 1978 Virginia was united in marriage to Steve Holub in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The couple would have celebrated 44 wonderful years of marriage this December. Virginia enjoyed rock and roll, especially Elvis, polka dancing , her grand-children, Indian history, and finding the best deals at garage sales and auctions. Virginia was always there for others, she spent time as a companion to many on hospice. Many of her children’s friends called her Mom. She found ways to make others laugh, and had an amazing sense of humor. She was always willing to help anyone in need. Virginia is survived by her husband, Steve Holub; daughters, Ruth Holub and Stephanie (Jeremy) Ashby; grandchildren, Heaven “Ezra” Holub, Trey Tucker, and Calder Ashby; and sister, Alice (Mike) Hovious; and many other dear family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Tela Cornelius and infant sister, Marilyn Sue Cornelius. A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Newton, Kansas. Visitation will be the evening prior, Wednesday, September 28, 2022, from 5 9 p.m., with the rosary taking place at 6:00 p.m.
