A barber with a mission

There are clues to how different a new barbershop at 202 E. Fifth is everywhere, though at the moment not how different of a business the place will be become. For starters, there’s the name on the window: Cuts for Christ. That’s more than a name, it’s a mission statement. Walk into the shop, and one of the first things seen is a blackboard wall - with the beginnings of being filled with Bible verses and memories from customers who frequent the shop that hosted a ribbon cutting this week. “That is for people who come in here, to write a favourite Bible verse,” said Cody Broadhurst, founder of Cuts for Christ.

Editors desk: Someone acting like they care

It was an amazing coincidence, really. Jeremiah Ariaz chose the Newton Kansan as the first stop of his artist-in-residence project documenting smaller, community newspapers in Kansas. He could have picked any number of places, but he chose us. The day he chose to come to Newton he first drove to the old Kansan building on sixth street.

Young BC women fall in opener

The Bethel College women’s basketball team has five freshmen listed on the varsity roster for the season opener against Northwestern (Iowa) Wednesday at Thresher Gym. Four of them saw significant playing time in the 99-54 Thresher loss.
