History could be in the making for the Newton High School boys’ wrestling team in 2022-23. Newton senior Nick Treaster will be seeking to become among the first Railer wrestlers to claim four state titles.
As girls’ wrestling expands in Kansas, Newton coach Tommy Edgmon is looking at that expansion for the Railers in the upcoming season. Edgmon begins his ninth season as the Railers’ coach.
Elizabeth (Betty) Martinez, age 80, passed away on November 5, 2022, in Newton, Kansas. Betty was born July 8, 1942 in Marion, Kansas to Juan and Josephina (Morales) Martinez. Through three marriages she is survived by nine children. Tom and Mary (Torres) Jaso, Christopher and Mary (Breon) Martinez, Jo Ann and Mark Pauley, Rose Paige, Roberta Jaso, Felicitas Jaso Cantu and fiancé David Morrison, Erminio and Valarie (Whitted) Guerrero, Shelly (Guerrero) Salcido, Mario Guerrero along with 33 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchildren, a sister Dorothea Pineda of Chicago and brother Guadalupe and Francis Martinez of Newton. Betty retired from Norcraft Industries after 25 years of employment as an assembler. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, sitting on the porch and reading with her dog “Nano”, going to bingo, cooking and cheering on her favorite team, the Miami Dolphins. The highlight of her travels was taking a cruise to the Caribbean with all nine of her children. Betty kept everyone laughing with her crazy sense of humor and contagious laugh. She will be greatly missed and always in our hearts. Betty was preceded in death by parents Juan and Josephina Martinez, brothers Marcus, Benito, Stephen, George, Michael, Reyes and Joseph Martinez, and sisters Phyllis, Luisa (Gomez) and Angela (Garcia). Grandson Thomas Nicholas Cantu and granddaughter Elizabeth Jean Pauley, husbands, Robert (Bobby) Jaso (Widowed in 1973), John C. Piland and Erminio M. Guerrero. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Monday, November 14, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Funeral services will be conducted by Father Jorge Lopez on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, followed by burial services at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Caring Hands Humane Society, and Our Lad of Guadalupe Alter Society of Newton, Kansas and left in care of Petersen Family Funeral Home.
Loretta Sue Franz died Saturday, November 12, 2022, at the age of 82. Loretta was born on October 18, 1940, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Joe and Ruby Eck.
