Daniel Wilbur Bergen, 79, of Goessel, Kansas, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born May 24, 1943 in Goessel, the son of Henry and Eunice (Wiebe) Bergen.

Glen Leon Davis, 74, of Newton, Kansas died Sunday (December 18, 2022) at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. He was born on July 28, 1948 in El Dorado, Kansas, the son of Harry LeRoy “Bus” and Letitia Davies Davis.

Nuclear Fission—A Fuller Picture

“Today we burn the rocks. Tomorrow we burn the oceans!” This was an unforgettable statement from one of the 16 mm films I showed to my students when I taught in 1971. My school district was poor. There was no money for audio-visuals. But I could borrow free films from the Oak Ridge Nuclear Lab in Tennessee. We also offered 9-week phase elective courses so students chose the science topics they wanted to study. One of my mini-courses was on Nuclear Power.

Winter roars in

Wednesday was the official start of Winter, and the old man swept in with a vengeance with frigid temperatures and snow across the state. At the county level, the road and bridge department had spent days preparing for the storm to come - equipping trucks, checking salt storage and spraying brine on some roads in preparation.

Plains Folk: Young Charlotte

Somewhere on the prairies, as described by a syndicated rural newspaper feature in January 1889, a crowd of young folks sprang a surprise party on an old gentleman they called Uncle Peter. To the bemusement of Uncle Peter as well as Aunt Candace, the visitors invested their home with all the things young people did on social occasions--popping corn, bobbing for apples; engaging in play-party games of the era like “Weevily Wheat” and “Sister Phoebe;” and, this being the Gilded Age, singing, of course.
