MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge Wildcat boys won their fourth straight game, stopping Goessel 83-28 Friday in non-league play in Moundridge. The Wildcats led 28-10 after the first quarter and 54-14 at the half.
Fitting for one of the lowest-scoring Newton Invitational Tournament girls’ basketball tournament in recent years, the championship game of the 47th edition was a defensive struggle. The 10th-ranked (KBCA, Class 5A) Andover Central Jaguars held top-seeded and second-ranked Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles to two field goals in the second half to claim a 41-34 win Saturday at Ravenscroft Gym.
SEDGWICK — The Moundridge Wildcat girls’ basketball team used a 9-2 fourth quarter to get past Chaparral 37-28 Friday night in the championship game of the 42nd Steve Shepherd Invitational in Sedgwick. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, Chaparral pulled out to an 18-17 lead at the half.
Allen Don McCune, age 84, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Newton Presbyterian Manor. Allen was born April 15, 1938 in Salina, Kansas the son of Donald Craig and Florence Maria Johnson McCune.
Kenneth (Kenny) R. Stewart, 63, died January 25, 2023 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was born April 23, 1959 in Eldorado, Kansas the son of Charles and Ethel Stewart. He attended high school in Newton. Kenny worked as a saw operator at Future Foam in Newton for 28 years. He enjoyed fishing, old cars and spending time with his 2 cats and dog. Those who knew Kenny knew his great niece, Taylor, great-great niece Jaylee brought him joy. Kenny is survived by his children Joshua (Ashleigh) Stewart of Hutchinson, Donald Stewart of Wichita and Stephanie Meilleur of Michigan. Grandchildren Brookelyn, Acelynn and Jaxson and Sister Cathy (Ron) Eason of the home, and friend and mother of his children Lori Siclebottom of Wichita. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Ethel Stewart, brother Chares S. Stewart, niece Stephanie Stewart and nephew Ronald E. Eason. Fred Saab, Jr., 87, of Shawnee, Kansas, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Advent Health Medical Center in Merriam, Kansas. Fred was born on May 13, 1935, in Haskell, Oklahoma to Lebanese immigrants, Fred and Najla Saab.
