In the garden: Ready to start broccoli?

It soon will be time to start cold crops like broccoli from seed! Broccoli has increased in popularity considerably in recent years. This vegetable, sometimes known as Italian sprouting broccoli, is a cluster of undeveloped flower buds. Two crops—spring and fall—can be grown in Kansas. Small secondary heads can be harvested for several weeks following the cutting of the large central head.

Railer girls can’t sustain strong first half

The Newton High School girls’ basketball team was flirting with a major upset in the first half against sixth-ranked (KBCA, Class 5A) Hutchinson Tuesday night in AV-CTL I play, but a 15-3 third quarter allowed the Salthawks to claim a 45-21 win. “It was an incredible first half,” Newton coach Tavis Leake said.
