HALSTEAD — The Halstead Dragon girls ended the regular season with a 53-33 win over Smoky Valley Tuesday in Central Kansas League play in Halstead. The Dragons led 13-7 after the first quarter, 29-16 at the half and 40-22 after three quarters.

County adds staff to prosecutor’s office

In 2022 the Kansas Legislature funded two new judge positions for Harvey County -- one district court judge and a magistrate judge -- thus giving Harvey County a total of four full-time judges. That action, in county prosecutor Heather Figger’s view, created a little bit of a problem for the county attorney’s office.

Comeback falls short for Newton boys against Maize

The Newton High School boys’ basketball team spent so much physical and emotional energy mounting a comeback that the team didn’t have enough in the tank when it came to getting over the top. The Railers trimmed a 16-point deficit to three early in the fourth quarter, only to give up a 17-6 run late in the game and fall to Maize 56-43 Tuesday in AV-CTL I play at Ravenscroft Gym on senior night.

Bethel women end season with loss to McPherson

The Bethel College women’s basketball team was outscored 22-8 from the free throw line, falling to McPherson College 66-60 Saturday in the Threshers’ season finale. Bethel outscored the Bulldogs 52-44 from the field, but fouls were 24-15 against the Threshers.

Thomas E LaGree 79, died February 15, 2023, at his Newton residence. He was born July 23, 1943, in Newton, Kansas to Willard and Elsie (Butts) LaGree.

“She Just Won’t Talk to Me!”

A shocking new report by the CDC confirms what many parents already suspected: Teenage girls are in crisis. A 2021 survey of more than 17,000 high school students found that 30 percent of the girls had considered suicide—a rate that’s double that of boys and almost 60 percent higher than ten years ago. Besides the unprecedented rise in suicidal behavior, the report shared other grim findings on sexual violence, substance misuse, depression, and other mental health woes.

Insight: Talk and Action

If it isn’t cliché yet, asking farmers and ranchers to tell their story ought to be by now since it’s often prescribed as a panacea that will fix anything wrong in agriculture. I don’t mean to diminish the impact storytelling has in shaping the minds of consumers and legislators. But I do think there’s another aspect that’s been taken for granted for too long.
