A Union Takes on the Housing Crisis

by Andrew Moss You can’t have a living wage without sufficient affordable housing, and you can’t afford decent housing without a living wage. These claims are being championed by the workers of one local, UNITE HERE Local 11, which represents more than 32,000 workers in hotels, restaurants, food service facilities, and concessions throughout Southern California and Arizona.

Railer Way change draws fire, explained at BOE meeting

Online bullying and the timing of release of a video showing a Newton High School Wrestler vaping in violation of the school’s Railer Way code of conduct became “extenuating circumstances” in the eyes of several Newton USD 373 board of education members, three of which commented during board member comments Feb. 28 that those issues specifically led them to make an effort to amend the Railer Way policy.

Northridge parents ask BOE to reconsider cuts

On a seemingly random Monday night at the end of February, the Newton USD 373 Board of Education underwent a marathon meeting – not the result of items on the agenda Feb. 27, but the result of a public comment section that went more than 90 minutes surrounding two issues.

Demo of burned out home to wait

The demolition of a home at 303 SE Fourth Street will continue to wait, as the city has struggled to find a contractor to do the work. In the fall of 2022 the Court ordered the razing of the structure at 303 SE 4th that was deemed a dangerous structure following a structure fire and property owner neglect.

Monday’s games Prep girls Class 3A sub-state Halstead 51, Kingman 44 HALSTEAD — The Halstead Dragon girls are off to the Class 3A sub-state semifinals after a 51-44 win over Kingman Monday night in Halstead. Halstead led 11-3 after the first quarter, 17-15 at the half and 33-31 after three quarters.

Senate President Ty Masterson isn’t even subtle when he says that he intends to do away with the food sales tax so that the state can afford to cut income taxes for the highest wage earners. And now that bill has passed the Senate and will go to the House.

Building a better Farm Bill

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher It’s farm bill time again. The discussions are beginning to happen and starting to heat up. Over the past couple of months, the talks have switched from continuing on with a farm bill with similar policies as the 2018 version or options that are dramatically different. What will happen is really anyone’s guess, and that is both a challenge and an opportunity for Kansas Farm Bureau and agriculture in general.

Newton spring sports teams open practice

Monday is the first day, under Kansas State High School Activities Association rules that spring sports teams may begin practice to prepare for the upcoming season. Newton has seven spring teams that were able to begin practice on Monday.
