Kansas Legislature ditches voucher plan that extended to unregulated private schools

TOPEKA — The Legislature canned a much-debated voucher program that would allow unregulated private schools to receive state dollars and put federal COVID-19 relief funds toward special education. The measure narrowly passed the House by 6558 Thursday and failed in the Senate by 17-20 early Friday, following heated late-night speeches from Democrats and Republicans.

Hesston, Halstead compete at Shocker Pre-State

WICHITA — Both the Hesston and Halstead track teams competed Thursday and Friday at the Shocker Pre-State Classic at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. The meet featured an elite division, which pitted some of the top athletes in the state, along with the Class 3-2-1A division.

Rare car found for MCC sale

Goessel’s Jerry Toews has done it again – found a real gem of a car to sell at the annual MCC Sale in Hutchinson. Each year for the past several years Toews has been in charge of finding vehicles for the sale, often offering a collection of cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles for the fundraiser.

Coin mining operation rezoning denied

A bitcoin mining operation in the southeast corner of Harvey County will have to move following a decision March 28, nearly bringing a year of debate to a close. On March 28 the Board of Harvey County Commissioners denied a request for a zoning change from A-1 Agricultural to RDS Rural Development Services for Butler Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc.

Commission to vote on utility rates

For months the Newton City Commission has reviewed water and sewer rates, mulling over a combination of budget cuts, rate increases, fund transfers and early bond payments to create a solution to keep the water and sewer departments from going into debt.

Larry Lee Guhr, age 82, was born in Newton, Kansas to John and Velma (Wedel) Guhr on July 15, 1940. Larry passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, after a short battle with cancer.
