Thresher drop long game to Southwestern

Author to speak in Newton April 28

Roxie Yonkey, a best-selling author, will discuss her newest book Secret Kansas: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 28 at the Warkentin House, 211 E. First Street “Bernhard Warkentin Jr. turned Kansas into the Wheat State, and this event is in his and his wife Wilhelmina’s home, now a museum,” Yonkey said. “I have devoted an article within my book to this captivating story.” The song “Home on the Range” is 150 years old this year, so the presentation begins with its story. After sharing the Warkentin story, Yonkey will highlight: Captain (Chaplain) Emil J. Kapaun, a life of hope and mercy; and “Mentholatum: the little nurse for little ills,” and how a former Kansas salesman turned Japanese citizen contributed to ending World War II. Kapaun received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2013 and is in the process of being canonized by the Catholic church.
