I taught about the range of variations in human reproductive systems in college general biology. Students would leave at the end of class thankful that, for them, everything had “lined up.” They realized how fortunate they were that anatomy matched their XX or XY genetics that matched their hormone balance that matched their brain region (BSTc) that provides gender identity.

Newton swimmers third at Great Bend

GREAT BEND – The Newton High School girls’ swimming team placed third Thursday at the Great Bend Invitational at the Barton County Community College natatorium. Great Bend won the meet at 469, followed by Manhattan at 453 and Newton at 287.

Bird park art panels completed

Kacie Schmidt, Newton, responded to a call for art entries last fall - submitting a fourfoot-square mural plan of a Cerulean Warbler (a small songbird). The Goessel art teacher in Goessel USD 411 was one of five artists selected for a very public art install - her mural will be attached to an information kiosk in a soon-to-be-constructed bird watching park in Newton.

Railer track teams third, seventh

EL DORADO — The Newton High School boys’ track team took third, while the Railer girls were seventh Friday at the El Dorado Invitational. Results of many events, including all the field events, were not completed.
