Insight Kansas: Limiting Kansas cities in the name of “competition”

I’ve used this space many times over the years to provide some defense of the political powers and interests of the cities that over 75% of Kansans live in. I did last month in response to a bill in Topeka— which thankfully died in committee—that would have forbidden cities from exercising almost any kind of local control over the businesses which their residents interact with. This month I’m looking at another bill, one that isn’t as egregious a violation of Home Rule on its face, but in the long run might turn out to be just as bad, or worse.

Newton baseball team splits with Andover

ANDOVER — Delayed a day by rain, the Newton High School baseball team split a doubleheader against Andover Saturday at the Andover High School sports complex. Newton won the first game 5-3 and lost the second game 5-4.

Sports briefs

Hendrickson fourth at open LAS VEGAS – Newton High School grad Wyatt Hendrickson, a junior wrestler at the Air Force Academy, finished fourth in the Senior Division at 125 kilograms at the U.S. Open Freestyle Championships, which ran Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas.

Railer track teams third, seventh

EL DORADO — The Newton High School boys’ track team took third, while the Railer girls were seventh Friday at the El Dorado Invitational. Results of many events, including all the field events, were not completed.
