Railer track sends 12 to state

ANDOVER – The Newton High School track teams will send 12 athletes in 10 different events Friday in the Class 5A state track regional meet at Andover Central’s Jaguar Stadium. The Newton boys placed in fourth in the team standings, while the girls were fifth.

Plains Folk: The legacy of Pioneer Bluffs

As I read over my last column, I realized it was as much (or more) about me as it was about Wayne Rogler, so I’ll try to correct that this time. Wayne’s grandfather, Charles, was seventeen when he immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1853, and in 1859 he walked from Iowa to Chase County, Kansas. There he took out a homestead claim of 160 acres along the Southfork River. His father, John, came over a year later and settled a couple of miles south of Charles. Charles married and had five children.

CKCF Spring Soiree honors volunteers

The Central Kansas Community Foundation recently held it’s first Spring Soiree at the Sand Creek Event Center to raise funds for its operating fund and toward its mission of “Building Stronger Communities Through Charitable Giving.”

Goessel golfers second at regionals

HALSTEAD – The Goessel High School golf team is off to state after a second-place finish Wednesday in the Class 1A regional tournament at the Wedgewood Golf Course in rural Halstead. The tournament started on Monday, but had to be completed Wednesday because of the weather.

Shortstop keeps Railer softball team off the bases

WICHITA — The Newton High School softball team was vexed by Bishop Carroll shortstop K Schoenfeld in a 12-0 loss in five innings Wednesday in the Class 5A regional semifinals at the Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita. Schoenfeld made a several four putouts, including back-to-back diving catches, along with a throw out, to preserve the Golden Eagle shutout.

We’ll give a very brief history here: Following a complaint to the city, the Grigoreva family received notice that they needed to find a new home for Ginger - a pot-bellied pig living at the Grigoreva home on Northridge Court on the west side of Newton.
