Finding common ground

If there’s one constant in the world, it’s every living thing is looking for food while avoiding becoming a meal. Farmers fight weeds, bacteria and fungus from the moment seeds go into the ground until the crop is harvested. Ranchers are on constant alert for predators waiting for the right opportunity to secure an easy meal.

How this Kansas farmer tries to make sense of the dispiriting mess in Washington, D.C.

Kansans now confront a “big, beautiful bill” approved by 218 Republican puppets in the U.S. House, and then signed into law by a convicted felon who was found guilty of sexual abuse, and who has faced multiple criminal cases over the past few years. Many of his indictments went to the core principles of our democracy. Unlike the average American, he has been given free pass after free pass by a Supreme Court that exists primarily to do his bidding — never mind right and wrong.

On June 18, Times Higher Education (THE) released its Impact Rankings and US News released its popular Best Global Universities Rankings. Then QS released their World University Rankings (WUR) on June 19. A fourth Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is also released annually and is the most objective in focusing on academic and research metrics rather than historical reputation.
