County to consider new pay rate for appointed attorneys

When the state of Kansas added two judges to Harvey County District nine, it changed how the court operates – and it had effects outside of the courtroom.The move increased the capacity of the court, increased the space needs for facilities and sent both the county prosecutor and indigent defense panel scrambling.The county prosecutor added an additional lawyer – and is asking for another.During the 2024 budget process in June of 2023, the indigent defense panel is sought a larger-than-normal increase to the contracted amount paid to the panel each year.The panel was looking at the court expanding the number of judges in Harvey County, and possible additional attorneys in the prosecutors office as well.Under statute the county is required to provide indigent defense services to those who meet statutory requirements.
