Plains folk: Spending time with the hounds

My father and grandfather liked to hunt coyotes. Not with guns, radios, and pickup trucks, as many people do nowadays, but chasing them on horseback with greyhounds. I missed out on that sport, but I did go raccoon hunting with hounds, which was lots of fun.

Snow storm knocks out school

A winter storm system blew through Harvey County in the overnight hours of Feb. 11 and 12, dumping enough snow to force school closures and a late opening of the Harvey County Courthouse.

County commission grants read only accounting access to commissioners

Two years ago, then new county commissioner Becky Reimer asked for read only access to the county accounting software system, looking for more “oversight” in monitoring the invoices paid by the county. Those invoices are approved by the county commission at each meeting of the commission. At the time, she was unsuccessful in gaining that access.

ELL program in Newton USD 373 grows

The English Language Learners program within Newton USD 373 expanded during the last year, with more students enrolled and more teachers trained to teach them. A bar chart viewed by the Board of Education on Feb. 10 bore that out, though it did not contain hard numbers.
