On an overcast Tuesday afternoon Kansas State Research and Extension horticulturalist Scott Eckert and master gardener Chuck Schmidt were unloading a pickup in front of the Harvey County Salvation Army building on West Sixth Street.
Kansas is the wheat state. Our state has outstanding wheat farmers, world-class wheat research programs, excellent climate for growing wheat, and fields filled with golden waves of grain at harvest time.

Jennifer and I sell lamb at the farmers market in Manhattan. Yes, it is a great way for us to sell our lamb, but what I enjoy the most is interacting with the consumers who buy our lamb. I take considerable pride in the meat we produce and in sharing it with the end user.

In 1979, I bought my first parcel of farmland. It was near Tribune, and I was a proud new landowner. As I recall, the purchase price was $350 per acre. Today, that land is probably worth somewhere in the $2,000-per-acre range. That mirrors trends in farmland values in other parts of the United States.
