The week before Memorial Day started with warnings about Greenwood Cemetery — high winds from a storm left many large trees down and roads blocked in the cemetery.
The city asked the public to “please avoid the cemetery while staff works to clean up” and asked residents should to place Memorial Day decorations.
Parks staff completed storm cleanup at Greenwood Cemetery May 22 and staff began mowing for Memorial Day weekend.
The Boy Scouts and American Legion volunteers were able to use their regular Memorial Day schedule, and on May 27 the cemetery was filled with flags and ready for traditional Memorial Day services.
Those services were attended by dozens of Memorial Day observers, the Newton Boy Scouts, American Legion and Auxiliary members and the Legion Riders.
