Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week voting opens

The voting process of the Newton Kansan Athletes of the Week for Week 1 of the spring sports season has opened.

This week’s nominees are:

Boys

Newton High School sophomore Cole Dillon
MARK SCHNABEL/NEWTON KANSAN

Cole Dillon, Newton High School, track. Won the long jump, finished third in the 100-meter dash, fifth in the 200-meter dash and anchored the second-place 4×100-meter relay team at Newton Invitational.

Colt Koehn, Remington High School, baseball. Went 6-7 hitting in three games for the Broncos, driving in four runs. Helped lead team to 3-0 week.

Corey Crumrine, Sedgwick High School, baseball. Pitched in two games, finishing 1-0. In 12 innings, allowed no earned runs, four hits and 16 strikeouts. Went seven of 15 hitting in four games, driving in three runs.

Girls

Newton senior Anai Fernandez

Anai Fernandez, senior, Newton High School, track. Won the 100-meter high hurdles, 300-meter low hurdles and was a member of the second-place 4×100-meter relay team at the Newton Invitational.

Angela Ewert, junior, Hesston High School, swimming (co-op with Newton). Placed third in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at Wichita Northwest Invitational. Qualified for state in the 100-yard freestyle. Led Newton to fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Kaci Young, senior, Halstead High School, softball. Pitched in two wins at the Kingman Invitational with 19 strikeouts and two earned runs in 11 innings pitched. Was 1-4 hitting with an RBI.

Voting is open until midnight Sunday and winners will be announced in the April 12 Kansan print edition.

Nominees are selected from results reported to the Kansan as well as culled from various sports statistics sites.

Coaches and administrators may suggest nominees by e-mailing cschnabel@cherryroad.com. Please include the athlete’s statistics for the week and a photo. Three boys and three girls will be selected as nominees each week.
