Old Setters coming to Halstead

This weekend will be the 137th annual Old Settlers Festival in Halstead, starting with a handful of events July 8 and concluding July 11.Starting as a community gathering and picnic, Old Settlers is now a four days of activities for all ages that includes things such as the Grand Parade and Flyover, the Great Race, Fireworks show along the Little Arkansas River, community barbecue picnic, live entertainment and music along with multiple contests and tournaments.Buttons and wristbands are $5 for ages 3 and up.

Special prosecutors plan to file criminal charge against police chief who led Marion raid

TOPEKA — Special prosecutors plan to charge former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody with a low-level felony for his actions following the raid he led last year on the Marion County Record and the homes of the newspaper publisher and a councilwoman.But the special prosecutors also concluded that police — despite their misunderstanding of evidence, a rushed investigation, and faulty and unlawful search warrants — didn’t commit any crimes by investigating a baseless suspicion of identity theft or carrying out the raid.Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson and Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett released their conclusions in a 124-page report on Monday.“There is no evidence that Marion law enforcement agents recognized the inadequacy of the investigation or intentionally or knowingly misled either other law enforcement agents or the court,” the prosecutors said.

Bringing Turkey Red Wheat to Kansas

August 23-25, 2024, is the celebration of 150 years since the Mennonite mass migration from the steppes of Asia to the plains of North America, bringing with them the seed stock of Turkey Red Hard Winter Wheat.Of the five landraces (adapted varieties) of wheat at the time, they found that Turkey Red was best suited to the sometimes-harsh climate conditions of the steppes and was an excellent wheat for milling into bread flour.
