Plains Folk: Snake Stories

Sometime ago, probably in the mid- to late-sixties, I stopped by the home place. While there I went out to the barn. Some years before Dad had hewn two or three cedar trees, then trimmed off all but half a dozen of the branches and cutting those down to about six or so inches in length. He had then installed the trunks in the lower level of the barn, using the branch stubs as hooks on which to hang ropes, halters, bridles, empty feed sacks, or whatever else needed hanging.

Kansas legislators want a pay increase. Those working minimum-wage jobs deserve one too.

Kansas legislators have figured out a way to boost their pay — through an independent body that would explore per diem and retirement benefits. Reportedly, the nine-member, independent body would shield lawmakers from the appearance that they’re feathering their own nests, which do need some feathers.
