Newton High School junior Izzy Sandoval hit the two shots heard round Class 5A Tuesday with a pair of goals to lift the Railer girls’ soccer team to a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Andover Central Tuesday in non-league play at Fischer Field. Newton goalkeeper Italia Chavez Arellano was unavailable because of a seminar she was attending.

Science author Cindy Blobaum hosted drop-in activities in the children’s area of Newton Public Library April 3. During the vist, students between the ages of 5 and 12 were able to make a buzzing bug; find and keep very small, real fossils; explore gravity through finger balance; and assemble a large dinosaur skeleton puzzle.

When and how much to water is largely determined by weather and soil conditions. Setting a timer for too frequent waterings is detrimental for lawn growth and health. During adverse weather conditions applying enough water to ensure turf survival is all that is necessary. Maintaining a dark, green lawn at all times during the growing season takes a lot of water.
An Open Letter to Our Legislature Since 2014 our federal government has offered to send each state money to expand Medicaid for struggling citizens. During that entire time Kansas has refused to accept the gift. The total now exceeds over six billion dollars that should have been spent here. Instead federal money collected with our taxes went to other states. President of the Senate, Speaker of the House, present this to the total legislature for debate. We elected you to represent us! Expand Medicaid!

Sheila Louise (Moyer) Ratzlaff, 65, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi-St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita, KS.

Millie Rose Hein, 78, of Newton, Kansas, went home to the Lord on April 2, 2023, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 26, 1944, in Lawrence, Kansas, she was the daughter of Lewis and Dorothy Higgins, and sister to Sonny Higgins, all of whom preceded her in death.
Goessel - Evelyn Mae Schmidt passed away March 31, 2023 at Bethesda Home in Goessel. She was born March 13, 1942 in Goessel to William and Helena Penner) Schmidt.
James Duane Hanke, 86, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023. He was born December 31, 1936, to Herman Hanke and Anna (Buller).
SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ golf team opened the season with a seventh- place finish at the Salina Central Invitational Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Hutchinson won the team title at 306, followed by Salina South at 314, Topeka Seaman at 339-91, Topeka at 339-94 and Emporia at 361.
