“It did not seem possible that a town could make such a quick growth in such a short time, but Newton, Kansas sprang up almost over night.” That 1871 quote from a passing cowboy, as cited on the Harvey County Historical Society website, demonstrates the importance of the Chisholm Trail and the railroads to this community and south central Kansas. The cattle drives helped make Newton a booming Wild West community in its day.
