The demolition of a home at 303 SE Fourth Street will continue to wait, as the city has struggled to find a contractor to do the work. In the fall of 2022 the Court ordered the razing of the structure at 303 SE 4th that was deemed a dangerous structure following a structure fire and property owner neglect.

Patty Tieszen was born on July 16, 1928 in Forgan, Oklahoma to Henry Mercer and Helen (Rice) Parks. She passed peacefully on February 23, 2023 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, KS. She married Lewis Earl Tieszen on August 18, 1953. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1995. She was a member of Walton United Methodist Church and was an active choir member with a beautiful alto voice. Her faith was apparent to all who knew her not because she talked about it, but because of the way she lived her life. She gave of herself and accepted others the way they were. She was a vital member in the Walton community, helping with 4H, Boy Scouts and various organizations in Walton. Patty loved spending time with family playing games and sharing meals together. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sons: Michael Kent Tieszen and Richard Scott Tieszen, four sisters: Luetta Conn, Nellie Fairbank, Catherine Whitney and Shirley Meyer, and one brother H.M. Barbara A. Schuster, 75, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri passed away peacefully on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Barb was born September 10, 1947 in Newton, Kansas to Arthur and Catherine (Leis) Scheffler. She attended Newton High School and graduated in 1965. Barb married the love of her life, Charlie Schuster, on January 18, 1969. They welcomed their son, Justin, in 1977. Barb was an amazing wife, mother, and businesswoman. She dedicated many years supporting the family-owned business. She loved being a grandmother, and enjoyed attending baseball and volleyball games and choir concerts. She always looked forward to dinner dates with friends and family and cheering for the KC Royals. She will be remembered for gardening and making her famous cucumbers. In 2018, Barb relocated to John Knox Village where she met wonderful friends who became her second family. Barb is proceeded in death by her loving husband, her parents, and her brother, Ross Scheffler. She is survived by her son, Justin (Lisa), grandchildren, Austin and Alaina, brother, Leon Scheffler (Lisa), and sister, Jody Meier (Doug). Barb will be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Barb’s passion for helping others will be her everlasting legacy. Her family is grateful for the staff, nurses, and doctors at St Luke’s East Hospital, John Knox Village, Village Hospice, Father Tom, and the staff at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church. A visitation will be at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church in Lee’s Summit, MO on Thursday, March 2 from 10:00am-11:00am. Mass will proceed the visitation. Interment will follow at Longview Cemetery.
Larry Gene Bachman, 69, died February 15, 2023 at Baylor St. Lukes Medical Center in Houston, Texas surrounded by wife and daughters. He was born April 24, 1953 at Bethel Deconess Hospital in Newton, KS to Weldon (Bud) and Arline (Young) Bachman. Larry is preceded in death by twin brother Jerry Bachman, sister Vicki Bachman, parents Arline and Weldon (Bud) Bachman. Larry is survived by his wife Valorie (Bogunovich) Bachman of Newton, KS;. Brother, Randy (Shannon) Bachman of Hesston KS; children, Jay Bachman of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Melissa McCann of Lawrence, KS, Melinda McCann of Wichita, KS, and Brandi (Derrick) Garnica of Newton, KS; Grandchildren, Malik McKinney (McKenzie Parsons-McKinney), Kali, Kale and Max Degenstein, Emerson, Grayden and Lennon Oswalt, and Cole and Isla Garnica along with many nieces and nephews. Larry graduated from Hesston High School in 1971. He followed the wheat harvest during the summers of his high school years and after graduation. In Larry’s early working years he loved his bartending gig at the Legal Tender in Newton where he made many friends, and probably a little bit of trouble, and then worked at Hesston Corporation in Hesston, KS. He later followed in his father footsteps becoming a fireman for Newton Fire/EMS, a career he loved. The stories he told from his days at the station were always one of his favorite topics. He would laugh so hard we would have to remind him to breathe, the kind of laughter that always sent everyone else into tears because it was often funnier than him trying to get the story out. He later worked in aviation at Boeing and Learjet for many years and then finished his working career as a cross country truck driver for Moridge Manufacturing in Moundridge, KS, of which he retired on October 31, 2021. He enjoyed seeing parts of the country that he had never seen before and made lifelong friends with all the dealers and sales reps. A private family interment will be at a later date in the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church Cemetery in Harper County, Kansas.
