Bethel track team opens season
PRATT — The Bethel College track teams opened the outdoor season Saturday at the Pratt Community College Beaver Classic at the Green Sports Complex. For the Bethel men, Isaiah Bartel won the 1,500-meter run in 4:24.72, followed by Luke Schmidt in third in 4:32.24 and Matthew Fleck in fifth in 4:52.48.
Four starters back to pace Moundridge baseball
MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge High School baseball team will lean on four returning starters for improvement in the 2023 season. Jason Rains returns for his third season as the Wildcat head coach.
Cardinals seek third straight HOAL title
SEDGWICK — Seeking their third straight Heart of America League title, the Sedgwick Cardinal baseball team enters the season with four returning starters and four other letterwinners. Doug Mabry returns for his 15th season as the Sedgwick coach, where he is 202-63.
Six returnees look to pace Bronco softball squad
BRAINERD — The Remington Bronco softball team will have six starters returning to try and bolster the team’s hopes for an upper-division finish in the Heart of America League. Remington is coached by Lyn Lawler in his ninth season.
Halstead features new coach, players for season
HALSTEAD — The Halstead Dragon baseball team will have a new coach and some new faces lead it in a quest to return to state. Mitch Boese will serve as head coach this season.
New Hope Shelter to break ground on new building
Work will begin in early April on a new facility for New Hope Shelter, a homeless shelter that has served the area for nearly two decades. “We are going to be able to get into a permanent home for the New Hope Shelter for the first time in 18 years,” said Brian Bisbee, director of the shelter.
Proposed tax changes cause concern for local governments
There is a bill awaiting a vote by the Kansas House that has some local leaders concerned - as it could eliminate some local revenues. Senators voted in February eliminate the food sales tax – including locally levied sales taxes – during a Senate debate.
