In the garden: Growing peas in the garden

Not only are peas one of the tastiest vegetables in the garden they are one of the most cold tolerant plants grown in Kansas gardens. They can be planted about as early as soil can be prepared in the spring. Most varieties produce pods and the seeds need to be shelled. Several newer varieties produce thick, fleshy pods, and the pods as well as seeds can be eaten. In addition, some thin-podded oriental types produce tender pods with only the pods used. Southern peas or cowpeas are an entirely different crop and are grown in much the same way as beans.

Prep girls Heart of America Moundridge 52, Sedgwick 50 MOUNDRIDGE — The Moundridge Wildcat girls needed a second- half rally to edge rival Sedgwick 52-50 Tuesday in HOAL play in Moundridge. Sedgwick led 20-12 after the first quarter and 31-20 at the half.

The five-member Newton City Commission needed a “super majority” vote to override a recommendation of the Newton/ North Newton Planning Board and rezone a property in the Kansas Logistics Park as requested by GAF Materials, a company looking to purchase acreage for a possible manufacturing facility.

Utility rate discussion continues

What to charge for water and sewer services has been the topic of discussion of the Newton City Commission – which doubles as the Newton Utilities Board – for months. A consultant and city staff advocated for rate increases in October of last year, while the commission has pushed back.
