It was the very eve of the Dust Bowl era, the darkest time in the history of EuroAmerican settlement on the Great Plains, when the Greeley County News, smack on the Colorado line, chose to reprint the full text (eight stanzas plus chorus) of a ballad dating from the 1880s: “Little Old Sod Shanty on the Claim.”

Students at Slate Creek Elementary have a dream - and have started raising funds to make the dream come true. They would like to for the school to have an “ inclusive playground set” that all students can play on with all classmates, regardless of abilities.

The Newton High School girls’ basketball team had trouble getting the ball to go through the basket in a 48-22 loss to Olathe Northwest Thursday in bracket play of the 47th Newton Invitational Tournament at Ravenscroft Gym. It took the Railers three quarters before the offense finally got going.

Bethel College student Eli Regier, Newton, is the winner of the annual Dwight Beckham Young Soloist competition (college division) sponsored by the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra. Regier, a junior music education major, is a saxophonist.

What is a ‘met tower?’ Wanted to take the opportunity to provide details to the residents of Harvey County about meteorological (MET) towers – what they are and what they do. I’d also like to explain the four conditional use permits that have been submitted for consideration to the Harvey County Planning and Zoning commission.
There are a pair of work sessions coming up next week that warrant attention - the board of education will talk about dropping enrollment, while the Newton city commission will talk utility rates. Neither is a discussion that anyone really wants to have.
