After a fully fueled KC-135 military tanker crashed into what was then a segregated Wichita neighborhood, my sister Chan chose not to believe our 5-year-old cousin, Tracy Randolph, had died in the fiery 1965 disaster.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s department has struggled to replace vehicles for the past couple of years. Normally, the department would replace three or four patrol vehicles a year.

Greetings from Puerto Rico! I am writing from San Juan where the American Farm Bureau Federation convention is taking place. Even though this is my first trip to Puerto Rico, I am a pretty regular world traveler with a well-established comfort zone and love for the adventures of new places.

Some citizens remember the extreme cold of February 2021 and our recent Winter Storm Elliott in December 2022, and dismiss global warming. But those were daily weather events. Climate is the cumulative effect of long term temperature changes. Averaged data on temperature readings have continuously risen over these last decades. “Climate Change Indicators in the United States” clearly show a rise in winter average temperatures and a decrease in heating degree days resulting in “the amount of natural gas used by the average American at home during the winter has decreased since 1974….”
Mary Ellen Gehring was born June 14, 1929 to Fred J.C. Gehring and Helen (Wedel) Gehring, beginning her life on a farm near McPherson.
- Valera Hamm passed away January 6, 2023 at Salem Home in Hillsboro. She was born September 10, 1932 in Tecumseh, Kansas to Presley and Helen (Buckle) Graves.


DERBY — The Newton High School girls’ basketball team did some things effectively against the sixth-ranked (KBCA, Class 6A) Derby Panthers Tuesday, but had no answers against 6-foot-3 Addy Brown in a 55-28 Railer loss. Brown scored 22 points for Derby, 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the AV-CTL I.
