Plains Folk: Glen Clopton

You never know what’s going to get somebody’s attention and lead to something else. In the 1990s I gave a talk, in Pratt as I recall. Afterwards, a retired Highway Patrolman originally from Madison in Greenwood County was talking to me about his experiences as a teenager shipping cattle in the Flint Hills. I used an anecdote, one paragraph, of what we talked about that night in a book entitled Flint Hills Cowboys, which was published in 2006.

Railer boys drop opener to Hays

HAYS — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team opened the season with a 65-40 loss to Hays Thursday night at the Hays City Shootout. Newton trailed 19-3 after the first quarter and held with Hays until the fourth quarter, when the Railers were outscored 21-11.

City to dedicate time capsule

The city of Newton is about to double the number of time capsules housed in an around city hall, part of the last vestiges of a year-long Sesquicentennial celebration. “We hope to mark the occasion of our Sesquicentennial, capture this particular time in Newton’s history, and send a message of community pride to Newtonians of the future,” said Erin McDaniel, director of public information for the city.
