Feds give ‘threatened’ protection to lesser prairie chickens in Kansas, with flexibility for industry

The federal government will list the lesser prairie chicken as threatened in Kansas and neighboring states, triggering protections under federal law starting next year. A smaller, isolated population of the same grouse species in part of Texas and New Mexico will be listed as endangered and receive stricter protection.

Byrd II helps take up leadership mantle for Threshers

WICHITA — When NAIA All-American Jaylon Scott headed east to NCAA Division I College of Charleston for his COVID year, he passed the baton of leadership to Bethel fifth-year seniors Clifford Byrd II and Bryant Mocaby. Byrd II picked up that baton Wednesday, scoring 23 points with eight assists, five rebounds and five steals to lead the Threshers to an 81-76 win over Friends in the KCAC opener for both teams.

NHS launches vape ‘buy back’ effort

Vapes, or e-cigarettes, have been a challenge for Newton High School students and administrators for years. It was the electronic devices used as a replacement for cigarettes that motivated students to approach the Newton City Commission in 2019 seeking a T-21 ordinance - a measure to raise the legal age for purchase of tobacco products.
