Shortages of basic goods still plague the U.S. economy – 2½ years after the pandemic’s onset turned global supply chains upside down. Want a new car? You may have to wait as long as six months, depending on the model you order. Looking for a spicy condiment? Supplies of Sriracha hot sauce have been running dangerously low. And if you feed your cat or dog dry pet food, expect empty shelves or elevated prices.
HALSTEAD – The finish of the Halstead Invitational cross country meet was nearly a disaster for Halstead freshman Addisen Wills. Wells nearly collapsed just a few feet from the finish line at the Wedgewood Golf Course, but she was able to get across the line to finish third in 19:49.23 for 5,000 meters without losing a place.
As a journalist Travis Heying would work on a project about Father Emil Kapaun, put it to bed and move on. But the story of Father Kapaun kept calling him back. He’s helped with two documentaries and covered the story of Father Kapaun for decades. “It is easy to look at him from a religious perspective or a Catholic perspective, but I think his story can be an inspiration for anybody, even somebody that is not religious” Heying said. “Kapaun’s life is a great example of selfless service to others. I think Kapaun’s life is very inspiring.”
A “thrown together” school supply drive by the Newton Kiwanis Club led to not only donated school supplies, but a cash donation to the school system. The Kiwanis Club presented a $300 check and a gift card to the district this week.
As promised in my last column, here’s information about the Hutchinson madstone. You’ll recall that in the days (centuries, in fact) before a vaccine was available, people relied on madstones to ward off rabies if bitten by a rabid dog or cat. The lightweight stone develops by accretion in the stomach of a cow, a deer, or any ruminant. First treated with milk, the madstone is placed on the bite. If it falls off, no rabies; if it sticks, it adheres until it is saturated with the poison, then drops off. This process is repeated until it no longer sticks.
We wish there was water, water everywhere. But there is not.
