It is the contention of many, even many Christians that the days of creation had to have been much longer than 24-hour days. There are those that insist that the earth as we know it took millions, even billions of years to become what it is today. In this short article I will not attempt to argue with science or evolution (not that the arguments can’t be made). I will only be looking at this topic from a Bible believing point of view. Many Bible believing people will note 2 Peter 3:8, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day” and concede that the creation days could thus be a thousand years each. However, 2 Peter 3:8 taken in context has nothing at all to do with the time required to create the earth, in its context it is referring to the second coming of Christ and the day of judgment. In part this verse is telling us that God is not restricted in time as we are. If we take this idea of a day being a thousand years and follow it through to its logical end, we have questions that come up. If this is true then God would have rested for a thousand years after creating Adam and Eve. Scripture tells us that Adam lived some 930, was God resting for Adam’s entire life time? Since we see in scripture that God was in the garden with them it is clear that this is not the case.
