Railer golfers second at league

The Kansan Staff WICHITA — The Newton High School girls’ golf team claimed three medalists and a second-place team finish at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships Tuesday at the Auburn Hills Golf Course in Wichita. Maize won at 356, followed by Newton at 387, Salina South at 427-115, Maize South at 427-117, Campus at 436, Derby at 457 and Hutchinson at 465.

Plains Folk: Scottish Livestock

A couple of weeks ago, I took a week-long trip to Scotland to take a closer look at their cattle industry. Several years ago my late wife and I spent a couple of weeks there, exploring the drove roads (what we would call cattle trails). We even spent the night at Amulrie, which was the site of an early cattle tryst (i.e. a cattle market), where we stayed at an inn that the poet William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy had stayed in a couple of hundred years earlier.

‘Summer Daze’ mural to be installed, dedicated

Youngsters at the Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival had a hand in creating the latest mural installed by the Newton Murals Project, a pair of murals featuring buffalo created during the festival. “We have two [four foot by eight foot] murals that were created at Summer Daze by about 35 people, most of them under 10 years of age,” said Constance Gehring of the Newton Murals Project. “The murals feature buffalo moving towards the west.”
