Railers affect outcome of league race
MAIZE — The Newton High School volleyball team hasn’t been in the Ark Valley- Chisholm Trail League race much this season, but the Railers did affect the outcome. Newton split in a league triangular against the two co-leaders Tuesday at Maize.
Sports briefs
The Bethel College volleyball team fell to Ottawa in three sets Tuesday in KCAC play at Thresher Gym. Bethel fell 25-23, 25-18, 25-23.
Railer golfers qualify for state
The Kansan Staff SALINA — For the first time in several years, the Newton High School girls’ golf team qualified for state as a team, taking fourth Monday at the Class 5A regional tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The top four teams qualify for state.

Reformation scholar to give annual lectures
A well-known and widely honored Reformation scholar will give the 70th annual Menno Simons Lectures Oct. 16-17 at Bethel College. Both lectures are at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center, with opportunity for audience discussion following each lecture. They are free and open to the public. Brad S. Gregory’s overall topic for his two-lecture series is “The Radical Reformation and Religious Freedom: A Historical Retrospective.”
