Greenhouse grant awarded to Northridge

Kansas Treasurer Lynn Rogers stopped by Northridge Elementary School on Oct. 13 with a surprise - a nice big check. To be specific, a $2,500 check for the school from a Learning Quest grant. Principal Megan Nagel said the school will use the funds to build a greenhouse on school grounds for classroom use.“ I am hoping that we can order quickly and maybe it will be up and functional this spring,” Nagel. Nagel nominated the school before taking a leave of absence for her health. Next up for the greenhouse project is a bit of research - finding what needs to be done to get the greenhouse up and working. Science teacher Emily Schmidt, who has a degree in botany, will be the primary educator using the greenhouse when it becomes operational.

United Methodists are breaking up in a slow-motion schism

The United Methodist Church, long a mainstay of the American religious scene, is beginning to fracture. Hundreds of churches have already disaffiliated from the denomination this year, with hundreds more moving toward the exits. So far the majority of congregations are staying, but several of the largest are planning to leave. The breakup comes amid mutual accusations of hardball tactics and spreading falsehoods.

Republican Kris Kobach aims to rebrand in Kansas AG race

TOPEKA (AP) — Kris Kobach, the Kansan with a national reputation as a hardline provocateur on immigration and voter ID laws, is trying to rebrand himself as a calmer, steadier voice in his comeback bid for elective office. Republicans hope the candidate for Kansas attorney general is a “new” Kobach. Many of them say he’s staying more on message with a better organized campaign after losing the 2018 race for Kansas governor and a 2020 U.S. Senate primary. Both of those losses were chalked up to disorganized campaigns and Kobach being too abrasive even for very Republican Kansas voters.
