New tradition at Bethel means murals on Haury Hall

There’s a new tradition at Bethel College for artists – spend at least part of the summer painting on campus. But not just any painting, a mural on the side ofHaury Hall. This summer the responsablity to carry on the tradition and create the class of 2022’s contribution to the mural fell to student CapriBisom. Bisom, a student worker at Bethel’s Kauffman Museum, said that the Indigenous pattern and coloring she chose is based on a cradleboard at the museum, while the threshing stone colors areBethel maroon, gray, black and white.

US declares public health emergency

By ZEKE MILLER, MIKE STOBBE and MICHAEL BALSAMO WASHINGTON (AP) —While the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has reported only one case of monkeypox in the state, the federal government declared a public health emergency Thursday to bolster the response to a monkeypox outbreak that has infected more than7,100 Americans.The announcement will free up money and other resources to fight the virus, which may cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue and pimple-like bumps on manyparts of the body.“We are prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously,” said Xavier Becerra, head of the U.S. Departmentof Health and Human Services.The declaration by HHScomes as the Biden administration has faced criticism over monkeypox vaccine availability.

Kansan to move to mail delivery The Newton Kansan will move to mail delivery, suspending carrier delivery for all customers,following the August 27edition.All carriers were notifed either phone, meeting, letter or all three forms of notification of the change at the end of July by members of the Kansan staff and members of Cherry Road Media management. Cherry Road Media owns The Newton Kansan in addition to more than 60 other community newspapers in the United States.
