Kansas vs. West Coast in NBC finals

Newton Kansan WICHITA — There will be at least one Kansas team in the finals of the 88th National Baseball Congress World Series after Thursday’s quarterfinals at Eck Stadium. The Liberal BeeJays downed the Haysville Aviators 6-1, the Hays Larks downed Austin Lonestar Baseball 5-2, the Seattle Studs outlasted the Hutchinson Monarchs 2-1 in 14 innings and the defending champion Santa Barbara Foresters downed the Mansfield TBT Ballers 8-0 in seven inningson the eight-run rule.Hays will meet league rival Liberal in an all-Kansas semifinal, while Seattle will meet West Coast rival Santa Barbara in the other.

County Fair opens

Newton Kansan On the opening night of the Harvey County Fair at the fair grounds in Newton 16-year-old Reid Golubski was busy showing off his made-for-the-fair project. It was a moment that did not look all that exciting, just a couple of people sitting in chairs and talking about food.

Rebels open Summer Ball Showdown 1-1

The Kansan Staff GODDARD — A Newton Rebel team was put together for the second Summer Ball Showdown baseball tournamentat the Genesis Sports Complex inGoddard.The Rebels finished 1-1 in blind draw play, falling to the Kansas Cannons 8-1 and beating the Kansas Curve 9-2. Newton opened single-elimination bracket play Friday.
